DIVERSIFICATION & AGRICULTURE CAMPAIGN | NEW FOCUS 2025

CURRENT NEW CAMPAIGN TARGET
£9,000

RAISED To Date [End of Sep 2025]
£1,000

[See breakdown of  Diversification Target below]

Why Diversification?

BH 29 depends entirely on subsistence farming for survival. The recent drought showed how vulnerable the village is once crops fail.

We intend not only working to change agricultural practices and methods but through initiating diversification projects we hope to provide sustainable incomes and dollars to buy food should crops fail.

These have been agreed with the villagers and build on existing skills. Diversification projects depended on a reliable water source i.e. Borehole Installation, now complete.

The village can start to develop and diversify, creating future resilience.

Possible Projects could include: Rabbit Breeding , Mushroom Farming, Sewing Enterprises, Chicken Farming…

Village BH29, North Western Zimbabwe endures the worst conditions in the area.

Changes to Agricultural practices

BH 29 will enhance drought resilience and reduce wildlife/human conflicts by implementing better grazing methods and herder teams for cattle protection. Boma (fencing) locations were shifted to fertilise soil, resulted in no cattle losses to lions last year and improved crop yields.

Following the provision of ample water supplies, VFA can now begin their diversification projects. The system seen in BH10 will now be implemented in BH29. This requires a 250 head boma fencing against lions, ($3000) and an integrated programme of grazing, livestock care and management and specific livestock skills being taught to the farmers.. Boma fencing protects against livestock losses to lions (reduced to zero) and with the boma shifted weekly, cattle manure fertilises the land. The fertilised land will produce good soil for production of crops and create food stability.

Protection strategies include fencing, chilli strings to deter elephants, and vuvuzela horns to scare lions. The village will design a grazing map for land management and will use ear tags for cattle record tracking. Bongani will aid in applying these methods, with support from village elders and the Victoria Falls Wildlife Trust.
