Chombe hit a good water source in BH29

Village BH29, North Western Zimbabwe endures the worst conditions in the area.

PHASE 1: An integrated water initiative, a borehole.

Phase 1 of the borehole is complete. A borehole 63M deep producing 14000 litres of true water per hour has been drilled and capped, ready for phase two. The supply will be set at 8-9000 litres per hour to allow for the recovery rate.

NOW COMPLETE.

PHASE 2: water storage and outlets, and security fencing will provide water for crops, stock, and people in BH29.

We anticipate a cost in the region of US$ 13.355.74 plus protective fencing materials costing approx. US$500. With a rough cost of $14000, we still have £4500 to raise to pay for phase two. Phase two will bring the water half a kilometer uphill on either side of the valley to two holding tanks of 5000 litres (one either side) and onwards to a system of taps.

This will free the women and children of the village from the daily arduous task of pumping and carrying (on their heads) 20 litres minimum of water per person, uphill, to their homesteads. Some homesteads have 9+ inhabitants. Once water is close to homesteads, initiatives which allow for diversification and economic security can be developed.

To develop a sense of responsibility and ownership, VFA has arranged with the villagers that they provide the labour to construct the protective fencing around the installation when it is completed. There is already a water committee which will be responsible for the careful usage of the borehole and its maintenance and one person will hold the key to the installation.

The villagers also offered to dig the 1M deep trenches which will carry the piping leading to the Jojo containers. They will also cultivate small gardens within their homesteads once the water is close and provide for easy access crop-growing to help supplement food production in times of need.

"Thank you so dear friends, may the Good God increase you.Thats a big step in our community towards eliminating poverty." Queen Silibaziso Mlotshwa after seeing the borehole drilling results.

"Great news indeed ,this will go a long way in alleviating poverty for our communities. Water 💦 is life." Gilbert Mabuza Ncube
