These two weekends raised over £1000 for our vital work in Zimbabwe.
Hoping to take advantage of the last of Summer’s warmth, we participated in a local Scarecrow Festival (23-26 Aug 2024) and organised a Harvest Moon Fayre (7 Sep 2024) the following weekend.
Torrential downpours threatened to ruin our tea and cakes served Friday – Monday afternoons of the bank holiday weekend, but our wonderful neighbours turned up to enjoy the delicious cakes donated and also made by the trustees and local community. 60+ cupcakes were a huge success, and orders came in by phone. I think people were consoling themselves on wet afternoons!
Learning from our first weekend (no fresh cream cakes, plenty of cupcakes and variety) the next weekend brought support from St John’s Pevensey Rd congregation, who manned stalls and brought items for the raffle/tombola and knitted beautiful gloves, which sold very quickly, along with the homemade jams/marmalades also generously donated).
Games were enjoyed in the Rectory garden, a lion guarded the ‘bush toilet’ bucket set up in the border, courtesy of local artist Frances; Father David manned the bar, and our treasurer made a loop video of our villagers, which showed continuously. Inside the church hall (for fear of rain), the Wacky band entertained a delighted audience, and vast amounts of cake and savouries were consumed.
Cups of tea and a popular tombola enhanced the fun, and Ezra won the big pink bunny (donated by the Moreton centre) (it was the same size as himself!). Books were sold and much community fun enjoyed. Some of the Moreton Centre residents arrived and joined in; a joy to see them enjoying the occasion despite various stages of dementia.
